A/C Update: Quieting a Kia Climate Control System

A redesigned A/C compressor disc and hub with better dampening characteristics can be retrofitted to some Kia's A/C compressors to eliminate load noise.

This fix involves a Kia’s A/C system making a racket when the system is turned on.

This revised bulletin replaces information published on Sept. 19, 2007, Climate Control 011. It readdresses some 2007-’08 Sorento (BL) models that may exhibit a knocking noise (mainly at idle) during A/C operation.

A redesigned A/C compressor disc and hub with better dampening characteristics can be retrofitted to these vehicles’ A/C compressors to eliminate the concern.

This new design disc and hub assembly can be applied to any 2007-’08 Sorento (BL) manufactured before Jan. 30, 2008, that exhibits this concern and hasn’t had the current redesigned disc and hub installed. figure 1

Note that there are two redesigned disc and hub assemblies, the first of which is no longer supplied. In some cases, KMA has found that the first redesign did not effectively address all customer concerns.

The current redesigned disc and hub should be used in these cases, even if the first redesigned disc and hub had been tried.

As of Sept. 17, 2008, only the current redesigned disc and hub assembly is being shipped from all parts distribution centers. The part number has not changed between the first and current redesigned disc and hub.

To order the current redesign disc and hub, use P/N: 97644 4D900FFF.

figure 2Repair Procedure:
1. Open the hood and locate the A/C compressor disc and hub assembly.

2. Use SST number 09977-29000 to hold the disc and hub assembly.

See Figure 1.

3. Remove the clutch hub retaining bolt.

Warning: Do not use power tools when removing or installing the disc and hub assembly bolt! The bolt is easily broken off if not properly removed and reinstalled.

4. Remove the disc and hub assembly by sliding it off the compressor shaft. (No special tool or puller is required.)

Warning: An adjustment shim that is responsible for the disc and hub to drive pulley clearance may stick to the end of the compressor’s shaft, stay inside the original hub assembly or fall to the floor!

See Figure 2.

5. Transfer the original disc and hub clearance adjustment shim to the new redesigned disc and hub assembly.

6. Reinstall the new redesigned disc and hub assembly. Lightly tighten the assembly bolt using hand tools and SST 09977-29000. Figure 3

See Figure 3.

Finish tightening using a torque wrench set to 7.2-10.8 lb.-ft. (86.4-129.6 lb.-in.). Remove the clutch hub tool.

Warning: Do not use power tools when installing the disc and hub assembly bolt. The bolt is easily broken off if not properly tightened to specification.

7. Start the engine with the A/C off. Check that the newly installed disc and hub assembly does not rub or drag on the compressor pulley. If drag occurs, the shim was not transferred properly.

8. Turn on the A/C and check that the disc and hub assembly engages the compressor pulley without slipping. If slipping occurs, inspect the shim location and proper clutch hub installation.

9. Close the hood, the repair is complete.
