Tech Tip: Remote Power Steering Pump Reservoirs

This Tech Tip covers power steering-equipped vehicles with a remote mounted pump reservoir. Technicians may find that the replacement power steering pump produces no pressure, pump is noisy or fluid over-flows after shutdown. This may be caused by restricted flow out of reservoir or an air-bound system due to a restriction in the system.

Tech Tip: Ford Rack and Pinion Pressure Port Check Valve Installation

The original rack and pinion may have a check valve and retaining clip in the pressure port. The valve prevents fluid from backing up into the pump when the engine is shut off. Not all original units have a check valve, but if one is present, it should be transferred to the replacement rack.

Tech Tip: 2005-06 Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner ECM Problem

Vehicle owners may experience misfire and poor engine performance. Fault codes may be set for coil-on-plug (COP) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM). No change in performance after replacing components or repeated failure of replacement components.

Tech Tip: Exhaust Restriction Leads to Turbo Destruction

Turbos in gasoline applications operate at extremely high temperatures and RPM. If the exhaust stream, including the catalytic converter, is even partially blocked, the increase in exhaust backpressure can lead to thrust bearing failure.

Tech Tip: 10 Steps to Trouble-Shoot Power Steering Pumps

What are the things that must be done to ensure successful diagnosis, installation and testing of a replacement power
steering pump? The following 10 questions outline the most common causes of failure, trouble-shooting suggestions,
diagnostic tips, and proven installation procedures and practices.

Tech Tip: What Causes Binding in the Steering System?

When replacing any steering component, it is recommended that power steering lines be replaced if more than four years old or appear damaged. Also, flush the entire system with new fluid to wash away any contaminates. If you do not flush the system and replace lines, you could experience a return of the symptoms.

Tech Tip: Saturn Crankshaft Position Relearn/Adaptives Reset Procedure

You may see a tell-tale service light flashes after replacement of the ECC on 1996 and newer Saturn vehicles. When this occurs, a Crankshaft Adaptives Reset Procedure and Crankshaft Position Relearn Procedure (Flash) must be performed.

Tech Tip: GM PASSLOCK Relearn Procedure

Vehicle will not start after the original ECM has been replaced. The original ECM has a security code (PASSLOCK) stored in its memory that matches the vehicle’s instrument panel cluster or security module (if so equipped). The replacement ECM can only receive the PASSLOCK code after it is installed in the vehicle and a relearn performed on the ECM.

Tech Tip: Flash Procedure for 1996-1999 and some 2000-2001 Cadillacs

The following steps are necessary to allow on-board Flash reprogramming of the ECC on certain Cadillac models.
The power feed to the ECC must be disconnected before reprogramming. Before disconnecting the power, the ignition key must be placed in the LOCK position for a minimum of 30 seconds. This process allows the ECC to store

Tech Tip: Turbocharger Installation Tips and Hints

Ninety percent of all turbocharger failures are caused by preventable problems or adverse operating conditions. Because of the close tolerances and clearances of these units, and the high speeds at which they operate, it is imperative that they are installed correctly and maintained properly.
