Tech Tip: Pilot Bearing/Bushing Diagnosis
Most rear-wheel drive, and some front-wheel drive, vehicles with manual transmissions use a pilot bearing/bushing. The pilot bearing/bushing supports and centers the transmission input shaft and clutch disc. When the clutch is disengaged, the pilot bearing/bushing allows the flywheel to maintain engine rpm, while the input shaft is slowing down and stopping.
OTC’s Brake Service Tools Help You Get Brake Jobs Done Efficiently
The OTC 4598 Brake Fluid Tester is specially designed for checking the moisture content within the vehicle’s brake fluid. Threadlocker 101 – Keeping Assemblies Assembled
We’re all familiar with good ol’ split lock and star/toothed washers, as well as fastener alternatives like self-locking nuts. And we know that the performance of various types of lock washers and nuts over the years has been adequate, but not typically exceptional. As times have changed, so has the technology available. In today’s challenging and competitive environment, wise shop owners and technicians take advantage of the most current improvements in products and procedures to enhance productivity and profitability.
Maintaining Your Balance: Engine Building Tips To Reduce NVH And Increase Life
Nobody would argue with the fact that engine balancing is right up there with “blueprinting” an engine. The goal is to equalize the reciprocating and rotating forces inside the engine so it will run smoother, last longer and achieve its maximum power potential. Although balancing would seem to be most important for high revving performance engines, it can also provide benefits for relatively stock engines, as well as low revving heavy-duty diesel engines.
Diagnostic Solutions: Nissan Pathfinder Wouldn’t Crank
Recently, an old customer called to tell me his 1988 Nissan Pathfinder “fishing wagon” wouldn’t crank. The Pathfinder’s battery was less than one year old and passed a preliminary conductance test with flying colors. The Pathfinder’s starter activation system is typical for many import vehicles of this vintage. In the manual transmission version, the ignition switch supplies power to the clutch switch relay windings when in the crank position.
Diagnostic Dilemmas: Solving Starter And Alternator Problems
The starter “solenoid” is actually a combination of an electric relay and solenoid. The relay portion electrically connects the starter armature to the battery. The solenoid portion mechanically engages the starter’s drive pinion with the engine’s flywheel gear.
Servicing Honda Civic Hybrid Vehicles
The number one problem with Honda Civic Hybrids has been the high-voltage IMA battery. The first generation cars use a 144-volt nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery, while second generation cars use a higher voltage 158.4V NiMH battery. Third generation cars use a totally different kind of battery, a Lithium-Ion 158V battery that is about 30% more powerful than that in the previous models.
