HAVERHILL — Police said thieves broke into an auto repair garage and stole several pieces of expensive equipment, but that wasn’t all.

They also broke into a vending machine and took $500 worth of quarters, police said. That’s 2,000 coins.

Police said the thieves’ operation wasn’t sophisticated because it appears they hauled the stolen equipment away by putting it into a trash barrel that is also missing from the garage.

Investigators are checking a video surveillance camera at a business next door to see whether it caught the theft on tape and will help identify the thieves.

The break-in at Ely Auto Repair, 150 White St., happened over the weekend —sometime after the business closed at 9 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Besides the coins, a battery tester and pneumatic tools were also taken.
