Tech Tip: Scan Tools Needed for Some ABS, ESC and A/C Service
Some new technologies may require the use of scan tools to service them – in unexpected ways. A scan tool may be necessary when servicing vehicles equipped with ESC (Electronic Stability Control), for instance, even with simple service such as an alignment. This scan tool helps perform the steering center calibration, which, if not performed correctly, can result in the vehicle pulling to one side or the other.

According to R. L. Polk, the average age of the vehicles on U.S. roads was 9.2 years in 2007 with 41 percent of the vehicles 11 years or older. Tech Tip: Be Careful When Handling Alternators with Floating Stators
Some original equipment alternators made in recent years feature a “floating stator” that is more sensitive to proper handling than previous designs. “The stator, or set of windings that surround the rotor, is press fitted or in a very tight tolerance situation in most alternator designs,” said Fred Padgett, group product manager for starters and alternators for Bosch.
