Delmar and Chilton Support Future Automotive Technicians at SkillsUSA Conference

Delmar, part of Cengage Learning and a leading provider of learning solutions for ongoing career development and education, and Chilton, also part of Cengage Learning and an established leader in reference sources for automotive professionals and Do-It-Yourself automotive enthusiasts, recently announced their participation in the 46th annual SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC).

More than five thousand top career and technical education students from across the country will meet this month at the conference in Kansas City, Missouri to compete in 96 different trade, technical and leadership categories.

SkillsUSA, a national nonprofit organization serving high school and college students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, hosts the annual conference to recognize and develop future leaders. Delmar and Chilton are both committed to lifelong learning and the skills-based professional, making them ideal partners for the SkillsUSA NLSC event.

“Even in this difficult economy, demand for skilled labor remains strong, and we are committed to providing students with the solutions-based materials they need to learn and master their competencies and skills before they enter the professional world,” said Greg Clayton.  “We are proud to support the SkillsUSA organization and all of the students at this year’s conference.”

As part of the Automotive Service Technology Committee, Delmar and Chilton will provide competition scoring and awards to the high school and college winners of the Automotive Skills Technology Competition.  This competition requires students to demonstrate their ability to perform jobs based on a task list outlined by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF). Students are judged in the areas of technical competency, accuracy, quality, safety and ability to follow directions. Representatives from both Chilton and Delmar will be responsible for totaling student scores from the various workstations, and will award the first, second and third place winners with a gift card and ASE test preparation materials.

This year the Chilton team will also provide its automotive repair information system, ChiltonPRO, to all post-secondary students who will be tested on their ability to use the system in the Automotive Skills Technology Competition. Students will be given a test designed by Chilton and will need to utilize the system to find the correct answers. ChiltonPRO is a tool that professional technicians often use on the job to help them diagnose and repair vehicles, making it important for students – and future technicians – to master.

Delmar will also support winners of the Motorcycle Technology, Automotive Refinishing Technology, Diesel Equipment, and Collision Repair competitions with gift checks and/or educational reference materials. In addition, Delmar will again be the exclusive sponsor of the prestigious Advisor of the Year Award, which is given to a high school or secondary school instructor whose teaching program has had a successful impact on students. Delmar representatives interviewed all of the candidates and will award the winner during the conference’s opening ceremony.
