Acura Tech Tip: Charging System and Brake Light Indicators Come on While Driving

The charging system and brake light indicators on some 2001-'02 MDX models simultaneously flicker on and off while driving. This is caused by electrical noise coming from the cooling fan circuit that causes the indicators to momentarily flicker ....

The charging system and brake light indicators on some 2001-’02 MDX models simultaneously flicker on and off while driving.

Probable Cause:
Electrical noise coming from the cooling fan circuit causes the indicators to momentarily flicker.

Note: This electrical noise does not affect the brake system or the alternator output, or apply to any other alternator problem.

Corrective Action:
Replace the alternator.

Parts Information:
Alternator: P/N 31100-PGK-A03RM

Repair Procedure:
1. Replace the alternator (see page 4-24 of the 2001-’02 MDX Service Manual).

Note: Do not use air tools on the 10 mm lower bolt. It’s very easy to cross-thread the bolt and damage the engine block.

2. Do the idle learn procedure:
• Make sure all electrical items are turned off, then start the engine.
• Let the engine reach its normal operating temperature (the cooling fan cycles twice).
• Let the engine idle (throttle fully closed and with all electrical items off) for 10 minutes.
