Employees work on a car Tuesday morning at Kansas Auto Repair in Newton. The company has been looking for ways to NEWTON — Not much goes to waste at Gary Carpenter’s shop, Kansas Auto Repair in Newton. Carpenter has been looking for ways to help his business “go green” and make less of an environmental impact, and he’s excited about the solutions the business has found so far.

Oil filters are drained and recycled, coolants are recycled, and batteries are recycled. Carpenter even uses bulk oil to cut down on the business’s use of plastic bottles, and any plastic containers used are drained and recycled.

Yet perhaps what Carpenter is most eager to talk about is a new program to re-refine oil: a process that cuts costs and helps the environment at the same time.

“It’s good for our economy,” he said. “It’s just a win-win for me. … It’s a great product. You’re helping the environment.”

“ECO ULTRA” is produced from waste oil products and is a re-refined synthetic blend motor oil. Carpenter said it takes less energy to re-refine oil than to refine crude oil, and re-refining oil also is cheaper than starting from scratch.
