Volkswagen Tech Tip: Humming Noise During Cornering

A humming sound coming from the general area of the front end of an affected vehicle (see article for list) may be noticeable during slow speed turns with the steering wheel almost to full-turning position. The noise goes away when the steering wheel is returned to the center position.

A humming sound coming from the general area of the front end of an affected vehicle (see below) may be noticeable during slow speed turns with the steering wheel almost to full-turning position. The noise goes away when the steering wheel is returned to the center position.

Affected Models:
• 1998-on New Beetle w/02J transmission; and
• 1999-on New Golf, New Jetta w/02J transmission.

The noise may be generated from a differential spider gear contacting the one-piece thrust washer under load.

Service Procedure:
If a vehicle exhibits this condition, do the following:
1. Drain the transmission fluid.
2. Refill the transmission with oil P/N G 052 171 (see VESIS for fill quantities).
Note: Part numbers are for reference only. Always check for the latest parts information.
3. Road-test the vehicle to confirm that the noise has been eliminated.
