Without question, you should sell an engine oil filter with every engine oil change. With an oil change performed every 3,000-5,000 miles, adding a brand new filter to the work order makes financial common sense for you and the customer.

Here’s what you tell your customer if he or she balks: I can offer you cleaner oil, longer filter life, reduced potential for filter failure due to pressure build up, reduced potential for filter failure due to repeated pressure surges at start, improved oil flow and easier filter removal after use, along with proper disposal.

While making cars last forever might be a little over the top, regularly changing engine oil and oil filters ensures your customer can rely on a longer lasting, higher performing engine.

Take, for example, the filter box on Mobil 1 extended performance oil filters, which contains a synthetic fiber blend filter element. Most conventional oil filters use a filter medium made of cellulose and polyester fibers. Mobil 1 extended performance oil filters combine a mixture of synthetic micro fibers and natural fibers to produce the most efficient oil filter on the market, says the company. The synthetic components of Mobil 1 motor oil are chemically synthesized liquids.

Extended performance oil filters yield the following key benefits for your customers:

• A much more efficient filter, removing more particles per pass through the filter than conventional filter media.

• Less resistance to oil flow, reducing the potential for the filter to restrict the flow of oil to the engine.

• A larger surface area to trap more contaminant particles, allowing longer service intervals.

Here’s another question. Can I use Mobil 1 extended performance oil filters with conventional oil? Absolutely, says Mobil 1. The filter is fully compatible with conventional and synthetic oils.

Finally, primary filters are standard on most engines. They are sometimes called full flow because 100% of the engine oil passes through them in normal operation. That’s why regular replacement of oil filters is so important. If blockage occurs in the filter, bypass valves open. This allows oil to go around the filter and back into the engine – not good.
