Tech Tip: Mercedes-Benz Suspension/ABS-Steering Angle Sensor Service

For Model 163 vehicles, including the 2003 ML 350, ensure WIS document AR46.10-P-0400GH is followed and adhered to when removing and installing the jacket tube. Do not separate the coupling below the steering angle sensor (N49) or damage to the sensor rotor may occur.

Fig. 1For Model 163 vehicles, including the 2003 ML 350, ensure WIS document AR46.10-P-0400GH is followed and adhered to when removing and installing the jacket tube. Do not separate the coupling (See Fig. 1, 1) below the steering angle sensor (N49) or damage to the sensor rotor may occur.

A damaged sensor due to improper jacket tube removal/installation may trigger the following reoccurring fault codes: C1172 (Steering Angle Sensor Internal Fault) or C1174 and C1178 (Steering Angle Sensor Not Initialized). If the steering angle sensor is found to be defective, do not transfer the steering angle sensor from the new jacket tube to the previously installed jacket tube.

Tesla’s air suspension is “smart” because it uses GPS information and vehicle speed to adjust suspension ride height.

The Model S Smart Air Suspension was an option in 2014, and it became standard for all Model S trims from 2017 to mid-2019. The four-corner system is similar to those found on European cars and trucks. The system uses an air compressor, reservoir and valve block that are all mounted in the trunk.
