Tech Tip: Bleeding Vehicles with Anti-Lock Brakes

When the brake system is opened for any repair, air is introduced into the system. ABS brake systems may require special tools or equipment to help remove all the air.

Application:
All vehicles with Antilock Brake Systems (ABS).

Problem:
The brake pedal has a spongy feel after replacing parts or opening the brake system.

Solution:
When the brake system is opened for any repair, air is introduced into the system. ABS brake systems may require special tools or equipment to help remove all the air. A scan tool that can interface with the ABS system may be required to cycle the pump and open the valves forcing the air out of the ABS unit. Some ABS units will require their motors to be reset (HOMED) before bleeding of the remainder of the system is possible. You are urged to use a manufacturers’ shop manual for vehicle specific procedures.

After the ABS unit itself is bled, the remainder of the system can be bled following typical bleeding procedures using regular tools. Again, please refer to the vehicle service manual for specific procedures.
