Maintaining The Cooling System On The 6.0L/7.3L Powerstroke Engine

One of the most overlooked preventive maintenance items in a diesel engine is the coolant system. Maintaining the coolant system is just as important as an oil change – in fact, the coolant condition in a diesel engine may even be more important than in a gasoline engine.

Diesel Particulate Filters: Regeneration

The increased use of EGR valves has led to a bigger problem with soot. So, in order to trap the soot, the government has mandated that all trucks built after Jan. 1, 2007, have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a catalytic converter. In simple terms, the DPF is a huge screen that traps the soot coming from the engine. This filter looks like a rocket shell underneath newer trucks. The DPF has temperature sensors and pressure tubes used by the PCM to help in determining when the DPF screen is full. When the DPF needs cleaning it undergoes what is called “regeneration.”

Diesel Injection Components

One thing that has been discovered with diesel fuel injection is the higher the pressure at which it is injected creates more efficiency. The purpose of common rail injection is to deliver high-pressure fuel to the injector. Fuel in a common rail system will be injected into the combustion chamber through the injector nozzle at pressures as high as 28,000 psi. This is far from the mechanical systems of the past that would inject fuel into the combustion chamber at 2,000 to 3,000 psi.

Diesel Injection Components: Coming To Terms With The Common Rail Diesel Injection System Is Not An Easy Task

For some time now, most of the development in diesel technology has been aimed toward making the engines environmentally friendly. But as diesel engines have become cleaner, the power levels have also increased. This is somewhat backward to what the country went through in the 1970s with gasoline engines.

Seventy Percent In U.S. Have Yet To Drive A Diesel

Honeywell Turbo Technologies recently conducted survey revealing 70 percent of Americans have never driven a diesel-powered vehicle. Among the Millennials (those under the age of 35), 73 percent have never ventured on American roadways in a diesel car or truck, yet 56 percent recognize that running diesel fuel is more fuel efficient than using gasoline, according to the survey.
