Report Card — ‘Defender’ of the Land

According to Land Rover designers, replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world

Land Rover’s DC 100 Sport Concept, revealed in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, could become the new face of the SUV maker’s iconic Defender line.

For more than 60 years, Land Rover has been building vehicles renowned for their capability and versatility.

And none more so than the iconic Defender.

With this in mind, Land Rover’s Design Director Gerry McGovern has led the Land Rover design team to explore a re-interpretation of the Defender.

The aim is to capture the adventurous, indomitable spirit established by the Series 1 created in 1948.

At the auto show, Land Rover officials confirmed that production of a new Defender is globally intended for 2015, though there has been no decision on whether or not the next generation Defender would be available in the North American markets.

Commenting on the Land Rover DC 100 concept convertible vehicle, McGovern said replacing the iconic Defender is one of the biggest challenges in the automotive design world.

“This is a car that inspires people worldwide,” he said. “This isn’t a production-ready concept, but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."

According to its designers, the DC 100 Sport utilizes world-leading all-terrain technologies, hi-tech materials and cutting edge design that come together to complement and enhance the original Defender’s core functionality, capability and usability.

The concept vehicle, designed with a 2.0L, four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, could also be equipped with a gasoline-fueled engine, or even a gasoline-electric hybrid engine.

John Edwards, global brand director, Land Rover, added that while the original Defender was loved the world over for its simple, honest and distinctive design, the Land Rover design team is determined that the new Defender will be true to its heritage.

"We plan to engage with existing and potential customers to help us finalize the details of the new vehicle,” Edwards said. “One thing’s for sure, it’s going to be an exciting journey, and we can’t wait to get going.”
