Honing the Noise Out of Brakes, and Extending Wear-Life

Manufacturers, rebuilders and service shops find a unique honing tool that gives brake cylinders and rotors a smooth, “non-directional” finish that eliminates braking noise and extends service life.

Tech Feature: Nissan Brake and Suspension Repairs; Solving Noise Complaints

At first, you may not think brake and suspension systems are closely related. But when it comes to noise and vibration complaints, you don’t want to be looking at one without considering the other.

Tech Tip: Prius Brake Actuator Noise

Some 2004 – 2007 model year Prius vehicles may exhibit a squeak-type noise when pressing or releasing the brake pedal. This noise may only be audible when the vehicle is in "READY" mode and the vehicle is not moving. Brake system performance is not affected by this noise. Use the following procedure to address this concern ….

Tech Tip: Lower Mass Brake Rotor Causing Noise, Fade and Failure Problems

If a customer complains of noisy brakes, increased stopping distances and pedal pulsation after brake rotors were replaced or machined, the rotors may be the source of the problem. It’s easy to blame the pads or brake hardware, but technicians need to look at the rotor. Affinia Global Brake & Chassis discovered during a recent benchmarking study of the competition that some rotor companies have reduced their ….

A few years ago, when Miller Industrial Products (Jackson, MI) got an order to make brake drums for Cadillac stretch limousines, they knew from the get-go that quality and performance were critical issues. The big limos were the heavyweights of passenger cars, and required the support of much beefier axles ….

Tech Tip: Creak-Type Noise Heard when Brakes are Applied

Some customers may comment on a creak-type noise occurring when applying the brakes. It is usually heard only during slow speed brake maneuvers. This condition may be caused by a caliper piston to seal interface issue during brake apply. If the caliper is removed and the piston is pushed back, the noise may be eliminated. This is usually only a temporary fix.

Acura Tech Tip: Rear Brake Clunking Noise

The rear brake calipers clunk when you first apply the brakes after changing the direction of the vehicle. This is caused because the outer shims on the rear brake pads do not allow the pads to slide easily when you press the brake pedal. This causes the outer pad to hit hard during a change of direction, resulting in a clunk.

Brake Tech Tip: Noise/Creak During Slow Speed Braking

Some customers may comment on a creak-type noise occurring when applying the brakes. It is usually heard only during slow speed brake maneuvers. If this condition exists, it should be able to be duplicated when the vehicle is not moving by depressing the brake and listening for the noise from the wheel-well/caliper area.
