Brake Shims: Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

A quality brake shim can prevent brake noise during the entire life of the brake job and will not dry out or be displaced over time like some lubricants or pastes. But, remember, a shim cannot do its job if it remains in the box.

Parking Brake Diagnostics, Repair And Maintenance

The parking or emergency brake has to perform two distinct jobs. First, it must be able to hold the vehicle on an incline. Second, it must be able to stop a vehicle under a specific distance if the hydraulic brakes have failed. These standards are set by the Department of Transportation (DOT), and the kicker is these standards must be met with the force applied by a little old lady. But, over time, the cables can stretch and the friction materials change their length and thickness, which is why adjustments to the system are required.

How Long Should A Brake Job Last?

All shops want to see a customer again, but not for a brake comeback. What is the magic number of miles that can separate a comeback from a service situation? Drag Reducing Brake Hardware

Reducing brake drag on late-model vehicles is not done by a single component, it is a system. At the master cylinder on some vehicles, there might be a quick-take-up-valve in the replenish port to hydraulically pull the caliper piston back from the rotor. At the caliper, OEMs are using seals with a special profile designed to retract the piston. Some vehicles are even using the valves in the ABS module to electronically retract the pistons. On the caliper bracket, engineers are designing hardware that can push the pad away from the rotor.

Honda Brake Job Tips To Ease Your Repair Procedures

All Honda brake systems may look the same after awhile, but it is what’s unseen that can hurt you in the form of a comeback. It might be as simple as a torque specification for a caliper bracket, or as complex as a parking brake adjustment.

Silencing Brake Noise After Service

There are no shortcuts to performing a noise-free brake job. It is a difficult job that requires combining the correct parts, knowledge and preparation to make sure that the brakes do not make a noise for more than 20,000 miles or more.

Brake Job: 2002-2010 Ford Explorer

The second-generation Ford Explorer is one of the most common vehicles on the road. The brake system is a product of what Ford learned in the late 1990s about what brakes mean to customer satisfaction. It is a relatively robust and trouble-free system. But, things can still go wrong.
