NUCAP Releases Brake Testing Video To Explain Brake Pad Corrosion and Delamination

According to NUCAP, this was part of a test to simulate what can happen if a brake pad becomes delaminated and part of the friction material breaks away from the backing plate due to corrosion.

New Study On Brake Pad Failure Modes And Corrosion Find Some Vehicles Pose A Significant Safety Risk

In a recent engineering field study of 3,200 brake pads, the Global Brake Safety Council analyzed discarded pads to find out it the pad had failed or just worn past specifications. The study classified each of the pads into five distinct categories or failure modes. The study also took into account the geographic location of where the pad was collected to help make the connection between corrosion of the backing plate, shims, and attached hardware.

Brake Pads: Dangerous Delamination Of Friction Lining Material

Both field and laboratory test results repeatedly prove that the friction lining on a disc brake pad can wear to within a millimeter of the mating surface of the disc brake shoe without affecting brake function, provided the entire surface area of the friction lining material remains intact during contact with the rotor.
