OTC LeakTamer Plus Offers Industry Best Practices for EVAP System Testing

The LeakTamer Plus EVAP Smoke Machine (P/N 6521) by OTC, a business unit of SPX Corporation, is a versatile, diagnostic, one-button tester built from the ground up to specifically test and repair OBD-II EVAP system leaks while operating in accordance with major automakers' EVAP testing specifications and needs.

The LeakTamer Plus EVAP Smoke Machine (P/N 6521) by OTC, a business unit of SPX Corporation, is a versatile, diagnostic, one-button tester built from the ground up to specifically test and repair OBD-II EVAP system leaks while operating in accordance with major automakers’ EVAP testing specifications and needs.

“OTC’s LeakTamer Plus was designed in response to the growing need for high-quality, value-driven EVAP system leak testers that work on SAE Tier II emission standard vehicles and comply with rigorous OEM safety specifications for EVAP diagnosis,” said Dirk Skogerboe, SPX aftermarket product manager of Professional Specialty Tools. “The OTC 6521 meets the challenge and provides more functionality and simple one-button testing for the technician.”

The OTC 6521’s state of the art electronics precisely controls the critical pressure and flow rates needed for testing today’s advanced EVAP systems. Introduce the non-toxic vapor with its patented UltraTraceUV dye technology into the system being tested and the machine automatically confirms the existence of excessive leakage. UltraTraceUV is the only dye solution available on the market today that is OEM EVAP-approved.

The OTC 6521 vaporizes the UltraTraceUV solution, and then it introduces the vapor into the tested system. A plume of non-toxic diagnostic smoke vapor exits at any leak point, depositing an ultraviolet fluorescent dye fingerprint at the exact location of a leak. This allows a technician to pinpoint leaks faster and more efficiently, minimizing customer come-backs and improving service bay productivity.

A truly versatile leak-detection system, the LeakTamer Plus unit is designed to work with either nitrogen or shop air — allowing the technician to use nitrogen for safe OEM-recommended EVAP testing, and switching to shop air for testing other vehicle system leaks. Automakers today recommend or require nitrogen-based testing for technician safety and to lower fuel tank and charcoal canister combustion risks. The SAE recently published a report confirming the risk of explosion when EVAP testing with shop air, click here to view.

The OTC 6521 also features an electronic safety valve that automatically shuts off airflow into the vehicle’s EVAP system every time the tester shuts off. This eliminates the need to remember to turn off a manual flow control valve in order to stop gasoline fumes from continually exiting the EVAP system and potentially dangerous gas fumes from filling the work bay. The auto-correct EVAP pressure eliminates operator adjustments and avoids the risk of pressure damage to the EVAP system and surrounding components.

Inexpensive to operate, the LeakTamer Plus comes filled with the special smoke solution and includes a standard accessory package with exhaust come, service port adapter, Schrader removal tool, assorted cap plug kit, 40,000 CP spotlight and water trap filter. An optional storage cart conveniently houses the OTC 6521, nitrogen tank (not included) and accessories.
