Kevin Harvick became the first repeat winner of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and his crew chief, Gil Martin, won his second straight MOOG “Problem Solver of the Week” Award after the MOOG chassis parts-equipped #29 Chevrolet captured the lead in the closing laps of Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville (VA) Speedway.
Presented by global automotive supplier Federal-Mogul Corporation, the MOOG Problem Solver award recognizes the crew chief whose car delivers the largest improvement in average lap speed during the second half of each Sprint Cup event while finishing on the lead lap. Harvick’s #29 Chevrolet, which started the day in ninth position, delivered a race-best 0.083-second improvement over the final 250 laps.
“Finding a way to win that’s what the #29 team has done for two straight weeks. Kevin and Gil weren’t happy with the car earlier in the day, but thanks to some great work in the pits and an excellent move on the #88 car with four laps to go, they came out on top,” said Federal-Mogul Motorsports Director Tim Nelson. “In both of their wins, they’ve had the best-handling car in the closing laps, and we’re proud that MOOG components helped make it possible.”
With just four laps to go on the 0.526-mile oval, the #88 Amp Energy/National Guard Chevrolet got loose and Harvick was able to edge by and gradually pull away.
