Honda Front Wheel Bearings With Integrated ABS Tone Ring

Honda Front Wheel Bearings With Integrated ABS Tone Ring

This tech tip provides part numbers and technical information for SKF double-row, angular-contact front wheel bearings with a split inner ring. The part numbers noted pertain to specific Honda applications.

The distinctive feature of these wheel bearings is that one of the two seals on the bearing has a built-in magnetic impulse wheel. Caution should be taken to make sure that the seal with the ABS impulse ring is installed in the correct direction.

The side with the impulse ring needs to be installed closest to the ABS sensor. If it is installed backward, the ABS system will not function.

The side with the ABS ring can be identified either by placing a lightweight metallic object (such as a paper clip) to the magnetic side or by a close visual inspection. The close visual inspection will reveal the ABS impulse ring windows, which can be seen through the seal surface. Care should be used when handling and installing the bearing so that the impulse ring is not damaged. If this occurs, the ABS system will not function correctly.
The chart shows the part numbers specifically related to Honda applications:

Wheel Bearing Analysis

What creates endplay? What creates noise?

On a typical passenger vehicle weighing around 3,400 pounds, each pair of front-wheel bearings, as well as the rear-wheel or axle bearings, supports around 850 pounds, depending on the weight balance and driveline configuration. If it’s a 6,000-pound SUV, each bearing might carry about 1,500 pounds. This load is concentrated on the relatively small bearing surfaces, which do not even take into account the dynamic loads produced by cornering.
