Pontiac Grand Am: P0442, Replaced Gas Cap

Pontiac Grand Am: P0442, Replaced Gas Cap

Year: 2003

Complaint

The customer states the check engine light is on.

Cause

Connected a scan tool and found code P0442 – Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak). Performed a visual inspection of the evaporative emissions system, but found no visible damage. Sealed the evaporative emissions system with the scan tool, connected a smoke machine to the evaporative emissions test port, and induced smoke into the evaporative emissions system to check for leaks; observed smoke leaked from the gas cap. Removed the gas cap and performed a visual inspection. The inspection revealed the gas cap seal was cracked.

Correction

Replaced the gas cap, cleared codes, performed a drive cycle and verified the monitor had been completed. The check engine light did not illuminate and no fault codes returned.
